Pho Real?

Post Christmas foods overload, we were hungry for something a little bit different. Barrett decided it was time to tackle Pho,  Vietnamese soup, and it was a winner. We already have some ideas to make it a little better, and I really want to have some of the soup base in the freezer before the baby comes!

Christmas 2015, in the books

I know we are supposed to wait to take down the tree, but I cracked early. We are nearing the 30 day countdown to baby and nesting is in full force.

Christmas Gumbo

Barrett is on board with this being a new Christmas Eve tradition.

Successful Hunter

Nope, not Barrett or I. This red shouldered hawk scored a squirrel and mocked us a bit. All in all, it was still a great weekend to be in the woods!

Powerful creatures

Yeast! So amazing. Make ahead rolls for Thanksgiving, my grandmother's recipe, are underway and seemingly out of control.

Treat!

I passed my glucose test, and am therefore negative for gestational diabetes! It was the ultimate trick or treat.

Wanna Get Away?

Work took me to Savannah over a weekend for meetings associated with a conference. Barrett decided to tag along. Neither of us had been to Savannah, so why not?!?
We enjoyed a quick visit to the Cathedral, but celebrated Mass at a smaller church in town.

While I was stuck in a windowless conference room for three days, Barrett got out and about, visiting Tybee Island and Hilton Head, SC! At least he shared his pictures :)

We enjoyed LOTS of good food in Savannah, but we both agreed that the best meal we had was at the Treylor Park, a new-ish restaurant on Bay St recommended by some of our DC friends. These PB&J wings were amazing. And this is NOT the pregnancy talking.

A Day in the Delta

Barrett requested assistance delivering magazines, and Bernadette and I were helpless to refuse. Plus we were promised tamales.
Hot tamales at Airport Grocery in Cleveland, check!
The cotton fields were beautiful! But we had a long day of driving and are glad our deliveries are complete.

Birthday Girl

Bernadette turns 4 today! And got a roasted sweet potato in her kibble. 🍰

Belize by Water

Our second excursion was snorkeling in Belize, home of the second largest barrier reef in the world. Barrett gets photo credit for all of these, except the one he is in. :)

This was a remora that was looking for a new buddy for attachment! It came off of a queen parrotfish and tried out several snorkelers as a host. It wasn't dangerous, just shocking to feel it's sandpaper like head try to attach to you!

A barracuda that Barrett chased for a picture while everyone else was getting back on the boat.
The trip ended on a beach with a snack bar and cold beer!

Babymoon! Day One

Back in the winter, we were freezing in DC and dreaming about warmer weather, so we booked a cruise. No idea that it would then become a baby moon. But it was! I did little on the boat but sleep, read and eat. I consumed three entire novels and countless calories. We left from the Port of New Orleans and I was excited to see the lower part of the river and the Southwest Pass into the Gulf. I think I was asleep by then, but I wanted my enthusiasm recorded for posterity.

But before we get there, we should get to NOLA. We opted to go down a day early, to enjoy the Crescent City a little. We took the train from Jackson. The in laws dropped us off, and the nieces were so into the train, that Pop bought them tickets to Hazelhurst.

They were so excited to take their first train trip! We stretched out in our seats and had a snack, and before we knew it, the train stopped in Hazelhurst and the girls met their ride. We enjoyed having them as companions for a little while.

There was a bachelor party traveling on our train, and Barrett had a great time with them, taking shots and doling out marital advice. ;)
We had dinner at a GREAT restaurant, the Italian Barrel. Bob & K called ahead and told them we were celebrating, so they decorated our table and gave us super special treatment. It is a definite do again! I made Barrett order wine so I could simply inhale the aroma.
The next morning before Mass, we hit one of our favorite breakfast spots, the Ruby Slipper. I had the croque madame and it did not disappoint. This might have been the last salad I saw for a few days, too.

No Place Like Home

The cat even seems pleased to see us. More to come on our Caribbean adventures!

Flashback: Any Given Sunday

We got an early start Sunday morning to beat the sun onto the lake. It was a slow start, but then the fun started.
I let Barrett take my fish off the hook.

We caught some monsters! Sandy:8, Barrett:2. He insisted on keeping score, I was fine to lose count. :)

Soda Pop Queens

Ashlin & Emma found just the right throne for their idea of royalty!
And then they burned off the sugar by dancing in the rain. Life is good!

Guard Duty

Barrett started work this week, and Bernadette is picking up the slack as security. Poor dog can't seem to relax, standing like this for long periods of time.

Noodle Love

Despite the soaring temperatures, we stopped at one of our favorite places for late Labor Day lunch: Little Saigon! Their pho rocks my world.

Breakfast Excitement

We spotted a fawn and her mama in the backyard this morning! A rare treat.

Preparing for Deer Season

Along with some much needed maternity clothes, my friend Maureen sent us this adorable outfit this week! Though Baby Newell will not arrive in time to be a reindeer for Christmas, the extra warmth may be needed in February.

New Chair

The dog positions herself nicely under footrest.
The cat wasted no time making herself comfortable.

Glad we could improve their quality of life, money well spent.

Flashback: Grady's Birthday

Whoever wields this hammer, if (s)he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.

Barrett aka Mr Freeze was threatened with Thors Hammer by Denise! We had a great time at the Superhero Party.

And Baby makes Three

Barrett and I are going to be parents early next year! We are very excited and it was hard to wait to share. We are looking at a SuperBowl or Mardi Gras baby!

Natural Born Killer

No one was more surprised than me! Our well fed cat has been spending more time outdoors of late, and apparently has been lying in wait. Bernadette was jealous of her trophy.

One of my favorite things

The backyard looks so tropical in this picture! Barrett sent it to me while I was it of town, because he knows how much I love the hummingbird sighting. After the ants infiltrated our last one, we scored this one which has a "moat" built in the lid which deters the ants from crashing the party.

Coastal MiniBreak Vacation

Nighttime ghost crab harassment!
Peel and eat shrimp...
And a room with a view.
