A Rare Snowday

The federal government shut down this past Tuesday with a forecast of 5" of snow. No complaints here.
Bernadette was in up to her shoulder. Even if she had those booties would have been no use.
They used a snowblower on the roof!
And we did a selfie since we rarely post pictures of ourselves.

C&O Canal adventures

Polar vortex has kept us indoors too long! We went in search of landscapes devoid of pavement.

Bernadette was the only one brave enough to test the ice thickness.
But like any male would, Barrett got a large rock to throw to break the ice.
And I spooked up some ducks and just enjoyed the ice formations around the boulders.

Oyster Happy Hour: Blacksalt

Our friends Brian and Heidi have taken us under their wing and are showing us some of their favorite places to score tasty shellfish. This weekend we went to the Palisades area and they did not disappoint! Also that fish stew was amazing.

Union Market

Barrett watched some English league soccer this morning at the Irish pub around the corner, freeing me up to get my chores done. This allowed for a midday trip to Union Market, in Northeast DC. We took the metro then walked, so not knowing where we were going, stumbled into some Chinese goods stores, cheap produce stands, and finally found all the yuppies.
There was a lot to take in, but we were taken with the meats, spices, and this bread pudding below. We just had the sample cup, which we confirmed has no calories :)

It has all the ingredients that one would want in life and it was wonderful. We rounded off our adventure by hitting the Italian deli, A Litteri, for lunch and wine with a screwtop. Very successful excursion!

Adjusting

Quick hello from Bernadette who has weathered the transition to apartment life pretty well. She must miss Vicksburg, the ample backyard space and squirrels that give chase.

Wanna Get Away?

Tired of being confined in a small apartment and cubicle at work, we took off this Saturday and went in search of rural pastures. We found em!
Drove up through Maryland and into Pennsylvania. Mostly we enjoyed the scenery, but we stopped in small town, Chambersburg.
They do a midwinter IceFest complete with chili cook off, ice sculptures and dunk tank they called the PolarPlunge

It was well worth the time and money to escape the Beltway for a few hours.
