Every Friday and Saturday night, it snows in downtown Vicksburg. Some of my loyal blog readers asked for photographic evidence. Note the variation in protective clothing, from short sleeve to warm hats, people seem to be enjoying the weather! Thanks to the Ware House for making this precipitation possible, it feels a little more like Christmas.

Turducken III
Before going in...Out of the oven and across the street. From left to right: turducken, turkey, duck, and chicken (not shown). Chefs and designers shown from left to right: Robert, Sandy, Todd and Jeff.
Lots of help to get things ready for serving. All the work that went into the deconstruction and subsequent reconstruction, no room for error. Thumbs up across the board--one of the best ever!

Turducken Rears Its Ugly Heads
Time has come again for the annual Turducken here in Vicksburg. Before we unveil Turducken III, let's look back to times gone by...
2006: Turducken I: On a whim, Jeff and I decided we could pull this off. We used wild mallards, extreme stuffings, and it was a triumph beyond our wildest expectations, especially for those who said it couldn't be done (by 2 immature butchers).
2007: Turducken II: New and improved adapted with a domestic duck, 2 new stuffings, and met with rave reviews. Especially by those who ate shot last year. Hip, Hip, Hooray!! We had a small turkey which presented some logisitical issues. Once the glow had worn off, we vowed to go big in 2008.
And today is the day...we have a new venue, co-hosts, and are expecting RECORD numbers. Here's hoping we knock it out of the park.

Deck the Balls Christmas Parade Party
With the lights all strung and the sound check done, doors around 4:00 pm. The theme was DECK THE BALLS, and despite the obvious references/responses, everyone was creative and brought food and beverages in the spirit of this theme. Some notable mentions included spinach balls, triple threat cheese balls, many many meatballs, peanut butter balls, sweet potato balls, death by chocolate balls, and "Holy Bocci Balls, Batman!"What a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season! Thanks to all those in attendance. More ambitious bloggers have a posting up with more pictures. Even one of my "mic-ed up" for commentary. If only I had more to say...

You could always have more kitchen gadgets...
And here is the one I used last night...a cherry pitter! Debbue says she will leave it to me someday. Until then, I will daydream about it, and wonder if it works for olives.

Backlog Blog
I will summarize my blog silence in pictures: Took Veterans Day and headed to visit my friend, the world-class designer, in Memphis. while he was busy busting walls apart, I stole away for a homecooked meal at Mtown's oldest cafe, Arcade. The broccoli with cheese was a supreme disappointment. In a very short time span, the team demolished, rebuilt and reopened the restaurant with a facelift. The website is still under construction, but we will keep watching for updates. Sole Restaurant and Raw Bar, the new hottest spot in town.
A few days later, I packed my bags and headed south. SETAC was in Tampa, FL and luckily the sun was in attendance. We managed to soak up some rays in between talks, it made it difficult to leave the patio and soak up the science. That meeting went well, but it is over, and I am further north in Melrose, FL to spend the week with my family. Plus I have a lot of sleep and silence to catch up on. Conferences mean talking too much, sleeping too little. Time to recover.

Meet the Folks
Late blogging about it, but the kitties and I welcomed by my parents and nephew this past weekend. For those loyal blog followers, this is the little brother of my summer intern, Xandi. They drive down from Tennessee for a few days of R&R in sleepy little Vicksburg. We arranged for a motorcycle parade and a Titans win for the occasion. We even had wildlife participation by a very large grasshopper that held the attention of a 3 yr old for longer than 5 minutes (photo taken by the 3 yr old himself).

Calling All Cooks
My first attempt at popovers was a disappointment, and they were more accurately referred to as popunders or flopovers. If you have any suggestions or comments on this, I welcome them. I will be taking a systematic scientific approach to this issue, although as many of you know, I usually prefer to leave it in the lab.

Feel the Flutter
With some extra time in DC yesterday, we opted not to join a political campaign, instead headed to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. And on Tuesdays, the live butterfly exhibit is free. Score one for the good guys! Then we met up with my friend Kim, who led us to this happening spot for dinner with great food and unique menu style, Matchbox--a vintage pizza bistro.

Getting it together...
a place for everything and everything in a place...in between football games, I managed to reorganize my kitchen cabinets, launder a mountain of clothes, and finally found the floor in my traveler's room. There is still work to be done, but I feel great about a weekend of "nesting" as my friend Chris used to say. Err, I should say the new Dr. Blanar.

Goodbye and Good Luck Liz
Last night, Team Mitchell hosted an awesome party to bid our dear Liz bon voyage. Specialty hot dogs were on the menu, paired with not one but TWO potato salads, homemade pimento cheese, local tamales and mix your own Lynchburg Lemonade. I hope others share their pictures, since mine are always blurry and not reflective of everything going on. What I did manage to capture was Liz and Todd watching the slideshow, featuring not only us Vicksburgers, but also the beloved dogs. Thanks to Mary Beth for allowing us to show animal pictures. No animals were harmed during this party, except for the ones on our plates.

Table of Tapas
Thursday night was my turn to host Vicksburg Supper Club. In true form, I bit off more than I should chew--with a guest list numbering 14 and a menu streching to 10 recipes. Myfriend Sarah Coughlin taught me long ago, in our Stillwater days, when it comes to entertaining, "if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing." My hope was to dine outside, but the weather intervened and we stayed in. It was a great party with all the right elements--food, friends, and flamenco music!

Come Sail Away
Weekend project saw the installation of 2 sails on the balcony. They are like "an umbrella, deconstructed" with poles on the corners rather than in the middle. These will assist with sun deflection, aesthetics and a sure-fire way to anger my landlord. Note the carpenter on the roof. Huge thanks to Jimmy, Todd and Rob for their design and execution of this endeavor.

Three more weeks with Liz!
Today marks the countdown of 21 days before Liz takes off for an assignment on the other end of the world. Although we will wish her the best, a support group will be formed to deal with the short-term loss felt here in MS. This picture was taken on Liz' birthday last year at Anchuca. We later sent this boa to Julie in Iraq as part of a girlie care package. Liz can expect similar treatment from the Vicksburgers. In related news, I am interviewing for new sidekicks. Maybe I can get Xandi back down here...

4th Excursion of Delta Diners: Bourbon Mall, Bourbon, MS
I am forced into premature blogging by The Ware House's mention of this website in association with last night's Delta Diners excursion. I wouldn't want to disappoint my loyal fan base.
Personally, I loved the stop in Leland for a CLEAN bathroom and restocking of the cooler. Here are the reasons I loved it:
1) we had to be buzzed in the door (someone look up the crime rate in Leland, MS and prepare a cost benefit analysis for a remotely controlled door)
2) live minnows for sale
3) no sales tax and proof that Rob does know how to stock a cooler (look, Todd!)
4) several men having a in depth conversation under a display of fishing poles
5) they shut out the lights while several Delta Diners were still inside using the facilities
6) a VW beetle covered in dirt and mud (nod to RH "you boys been muddin'?")
7) they serve Po Boys and Muffalettas (can we add this location to the Delta Diners list?)
Okay, onto the good stuff. Bourbon Mall exceeded expectations on so many fronts. We had an entertaining waitress who repeatedly coerced our laughter with tales of her daily exploits of extraordinary customer service. Also, of how her boss seems to have radar on when she accidentally says something inappropriate to the patrons. I think she sat us in the back room for just this reason. Right off she pegged Ned for as a problem child and warned him "you're mouth is going to get you in trouble." She bought us a basket of fried tamales for sampling, she upgraded my T-bone to a porterhouse at no additional charge and told me "just shut up about it" when I tried to thank her. I shamelessly shared my bounty with Kristen, who's dinner was delayed by the chicken breast selection, and Liz, who ordered the stuffed catfish, but still wanted steak. She was right to make a request, that slice of cow was so good, Rob and I felt the need to be thorough (see below). At least I draw the line at licking the plate (in public).
'Til next month's dinner, we leave the Delta as content Diners once again.

Movie Premiere in Downtown Vicksburg
I know you are skeptical of the title, but it really happened. The Ware House Lounge threw a red carpet bash for the DVD release of the Sex and the City Movie. We put on our unsensible shoes and hit the town on a Tuesday night. Pictures taken by the Ware House staff.
